You know, there are times when we are working toward a goal and we tend to backslide and fall back into our old habits. This happens when we are trying to lose weight, stop using profanity, give up drugs and alcohol, it really can be anything that we’ve set our mind on changing.
You’ve been working hard getting your credit cards paid down and then you have a time frame (could be a day, could be a few weeks) that you’ve gotten back into the old swing of things and you are putting charges back on those credit cards. You look at your new statement balance or increased payment and you’ve sabotaged your progress. You may have even thought you can’t do anything right as you compare this to other situations in your life like a job loss or divorce. This cycle will cause someone to give up on their goal and it will sometimes make someone want to give up on themselves.
I don’t want you to give up on anything that you recognize you need or want to change in any area so consider these life hacks when you back slide.
You Forgot Why You Started- You may have not thought about your why in a while. You may even recognize that you need to change your why. Create a practice where you can revisit this reason you started daily to help you stay focused.
You Don’t Have Support-Have you been open about what you are trying to do with those closest to you? If not, you may not have the support that you need. Find a community that is on the same journey that you are. Share your goal with your children. You are not alone on your journey and you don’t have to try and do it alone. If your circle is opposing and not supportive maybe you need to think about finding a new circle. Surround yourself with others who can help you stay on track.
You Need to Adjust- It’s possible that you heard something working for someone else so you jumped on the bandwagon. A lot of times we skip other important steps that led up to where the other person shared about. Figure out what step(s) you may have skipped in the process and make the necessary adjustment.
You Think Failure is Bad- Failure is a good thing. Failure means that you took a chance toward doing something out of your normal comfort because you recognize the good in the change. Failure teaches us what doesn’t work so we don’t keep wasting our energy at a null task or process. Use these times to figure out your move toward your goal and try again.
Remind yourself that with life, there will be good days and there will be bad days. The combination of these days is designed to keep you alert of the need for balance and growth.
Which of these hacks resonates with you the most? Let me know in the comments.
